For those who don't know, DevNTell is a 30-minute podcast held every Friday, giving founders, hackers, and builders a platform to showcase their products. Today, I'm thrilled to have JZBNB and Marwan from BNB Chain on the show. BNB Chain is a top blockchain ecosystem designed to meet the growing demands of the decentralized web. JZBNB and Marwan will be sharing the latest developments from the BNB Chain ecosystem and how you can start building your next DApp with them today. Let's dive in!

Narb

GM, GM! Welcome to the show, Marwan and JZBNB.

Marwan

Hey, hey! How's it going?

JZBNB

Hey! Good to be here.

Narb

JZBNB, welcome back! It's been about a year since you were last on, and BNB has seen some great growth since then. Marwan, welcome for the first time! Before we jump into the BNB Chain details, would you both like to introduce yourselves to our audience?

JZBNB

Sure, I'll start. I'm JZBNB, and I'm part of the BNB Tech Team. My role is to gather insights from core developers, researchers, and ecosystem builders behind BNB Chain. Our team is global and very focused on engineering and product management, and we're passionate about building scalable and accessible decentralized infrastructure, especially for the next billion users.

Marwan

And I'm Marwan. I head up our DeFi ecosystem efforts in the EMEA region for BNB Chain. I mainly work with developers, helping to incubate, accelerate, and invest in new protocols. Our mission is to help build powerful, scalable, and beautifully designed products that everyday users can enjoy as we onboard more people onto the chain.

Narb

Amazing! You both have impressive backgrounds in tech and Web3. How did you first get started in the space and eventually find your way to BNB Chain?

JZBNB

I come from a traditional tech background, with over 15 years as a software and systems engineer for servers and clouds. My move into Web3 was driven by pure curiosity. Blockchain was a new concept for me, but I saw it as a natural evolution toward data ownership and decentralization. I really disliked the centralization of power and data in Web2, and Web3 offered a paradigm shift toward a more transparent, open-source, and equitable internet.

Marwan

Similar to JZBNB, it was curiosity for me as well. I was an economics and philosophy student, drawn to the idea of more transparent and equitable economic structures. I started in crypto research and then moved into corporate venture capital before joining BNB Chain professionally. BNB is a crucial entry point for people accessing the on-chain economy, and I'm passionate about lowering barriers and building powerful applications for new users.

Narb

It sounds like you both have extensive experience. Out of all the protocols and chains out there, what specifically stood out about BNB Chain as the place you wanted to be?

JZBNB

For me, it's BNB Chain's commitment to mass adoption. While other chains might focus on just the product or tech, BNB has a very solid foundation and a huge user base. It's high-performance and is arguably the best 'playground' for developers wanting to build DApps that can scale to a massive audience. It's much harder to bootstrap an application and get that initial traction on other chains compared to BNB.

Marwan

For me, it was both the product and the people. From a product standpoint, BNB has unparalleled reach and distribution power, making it the ideal place to build something of consequence. And from a people standpoint, the community of users, contributors, and developers I've met here is incredibly passionate and welcoming. Both factors made it the right choice for me.

Narb

That's great. BNB Chain certainly offers a wide array of tools and options for developers. Recently, you went through a significant upgrade with the Maxwell hardfork. Can you explain what that means for the chain and its developers?

JZBNB

The Maxwell hardfork is a major milestone for BSC (BNB Smart Chain). It effectively halved block times from 1.5 seconds down to 750 milliseconds. This leap in performance significantly improves the user experience, making transactions feel nearly instantaneous. This is particularly crucial for time-sensitive applications like DeFi or on-chain gaming (GameFi).

JZBNB

Beyond speed, shorter block times also reduce exposure to MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) attacks, like sandwich attacks. It also allows developers to build more innovative apps requiring faster transaction confirmations. For instance, a deposit to a centralized exchange like Binance now confirms in less than two seconds, which is a huge improvement.

JZBNB

Maxwell incorporates several BEPs (BNB Chain Evolution Proposals). BEP-524, for example, focuses on reducing block times. We also introduced validator communication enhancements to ensure the network remains stable and reliable even at these higher speeds. Faster block syncing also allows nodes on the network to retrieve and process block data more efficiently.

Narb

That sounds like a significant achievement. When was this upgrade officially launched? Has it been out for a while now?

JZBNB

It launched in June, so it's been live for about a month. You can definitely feel the difference in transaction speeds now.

Narb

Congrats! That's a great milestone. Aside from the Maxwell hardfork, what are some other key highlights or reasons why developers should choose BNB Chain as their home chain?

JZBNB

Looking ahead to the next six months, we're pushing boundaries even further. We're working closely with the Reth team to introduce a Rust-based client on BNB Chain. This will not only further increase throughput but also promote client diversity, making the chain more secure and decentralized. We're calling this our 'One BNB' paradigm.

JZBNB

This paradigm means BSC serves as the hub for high-value DeFi and NFTs, while our Layer 2 solution, opBNB, is ideal for high-transaction apps like gaming and social media. Another key differentiator is BNB Greenfield, our decentralized storage solution. It's perfect for hosting DApps and tokenizing data, particularly for the decentralized AI applications we're seeing emerge.

Marwan

To add to that, we know there's more choice than ever for developers with the proliferation of chains. But for those looking for scale, liquidity, and a massive user base, BNB Chain is consistently a top choice. We have a huge percentage of total trading volume and rank highly in terms of liquidity. We offer a fantastic product-market fit for developers and users alike.

Marwan

We also offer extensive support through our team. We've recently set up a physical community space in NYC called the 'Builder Bunker.' It's a space for developers, investors, and community members to meet, collaborate, and participate in our programs. Being accessible and supporting the community in real-time is part of our mission.

JZBNB

And we can't forget the MVB program, Marwan. It's another great way we support builders.

Marwan

Exactly! I was hoping Narb would ask about that.

Narb

Well, let's hear more about it! What's the MVB program all about?

Marwan

The MVB (Most Valuable Builder) program is one of the best ways to build a product on-chain right now. It's a joint initiative between Binance Labs, BNB Chain, and CoinMarketCap. We support teams across three pillars: financial support, marketing support (to build brand equity), and commercial/ecosystem reach.

Marwan

The program is now in its 10th edition and has a legacy of incubating top protocols like PancakeSwap. It's a multi-week program where teams work closely with people like JZBNB and myself, and it culminates in a demo day where they can connect with Tier-1 investors. It's highly competitive, but it gives teams a real chance at achieving major success.

Narb

What's the application process like for interested teams?

Marwan

You can find all the details and the application on the bnbchain.org website. We run specific cohorts—Cohort 10 was just announced recently. Even if teams have never considered working with BNB before, it's always worth starting a conversation. We're here to be a lever for expansion and help your product achieve long-term success.

Narb

That's a great opportunity. We'll make sure to link that in the description. Now, shifting gears back to AI—JZBNB, you mentioned BNB Chain's focus on decentralized AI. Can you elaborate on your broader AI strategy and what kinds of use cases you're seeing?

JZBNB

AI is a core part of our 2025 roadmap. Our 'AI-First' strategy involves developing AI-powered tools like an AI code co-pilot to help developers and integrating AI directly into DApps. BNB Greenfield is central to this, as it allows for true data ownership. Users can upload data, have it tokenized on BSC, and manage access via smart contracts. This creates a secure foundation for AI applications that rely heavily on data and data ownership.

JZBNB

One major use case we're seeing is data marketplaces for AI training. BNB Greenfield enables transparent data contributions and rewards, ensuring that high-quality data can be purchased and used safely. We've been working on this for over two years now, so our AI focus didn't just start recently—it's built on a very solid foundation.

Marwan

To add to that, the intersection of AI and crypto is still very new. Crypto can provide essential tools like cryptographic proofs and on-chain verification that AI needs as it becomes more widespread. We're also seeing interesting AI-native consumer apps, like agentic commerce where crypto provides the rails for automated AI payments. It's a wide-open space, and our team is ready to help developers optimize their products in this area.

Narb

I agree. It's an exciting time with AI and crypto really starting to converge. There's also been a lot of talk about stablecoins recently. How do you see those fitting into the AI and BNB ecosystem?

Marwan

Stablecoins are part of the fundamental fabric of our industry, and their liquidity on BNB Chain has always been strong. We're seeing renewed interest now due to growing institutional adoption and regulatory clarity. While AI apps might be the current hype, stablecoins are an essential building block that will only become more integrated as the commercial models for AI become clearer.

Narb

Absolutely. It's a very exciting time to see all these technologies merge. Unfortunately, we're out of time for today. JZBNB, Marwan, thank you so much for joining us and sharing these insights into the BNB Chain ecosystem.

JZBNB

Our pleasure, thank you for having us!

Marwan
