
The Economics of Truth and the Deliberate Moon Fork
Around 2020, placing a single bet on Augur could cost thirty or forty dollars in Ethereum gas fees, even for someone who only wanted to wager fifty. Phill, who goes by Augus and has spent six years in the Augur community, points to that moment as the turning point for the protocol. DeFi summer had pushed gas prices to levels that made smaller predictions impractical, while newer platforms like Polymarket solved the scaling problem by processing transactions for cents on Polygon. For Phill, this shift was a necessary evolution for the industry, but it also highlighted the piece of infrastructure that Augur was originally built to protect: the decentralized oracle.

Augur was created in 2014 by Jack Peterson and Joey Krug, entering public beta in 2016 and launching on Ethereum mainnet in July 2018. It functioned as both a prediction market and an oracle sitting directly on the base layer. During the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, the protocol resolved markets with millions of dollars in open interest. Phill notes that while Polymarket eventually reached much higher volumes, the arrival of competitors allowed Augur to focus on its core mission of providing trustless resolution for real-world outcomes.
Phill describes himself as a cypherpunk and a believer in libertarian values. He views crypto as a Swiss Army knife for freedom, offering a way for people to act in self-sovereign ways without permissioned moats. In his view, prediction markets are not just for wagering on sports or election results. Instead, he sees them as an information tool. A prediction market acts as a meritocratic playground where anyone with specialized knowledge can profit from being right, creating a global dashboard of probabilities that aggregates information from around the world.
A Button Worth Ten Million Dollars
The fundamental problem for any prediction market is how to tell the blockchain what happened in the outside world. The blockchain cannot independently see the weather, the score of a game, or the result of a vote. This is the role of the oracle. The difficulty arises when the value tied to that outcome becomes large enough to incentivize lying. Phill explains the risk by looking at the moment of resolution.
Some people make a false assumption when betting on prediction markets: they think if their team wins, they get paid out. But they overlook that somebody or something after the event must push the button to route the funds. If you have $10 million at stake in a prediction market, that button-pressing mechanism has a $10 million incentive to lie and rug the market by mis-resolving it.
Trusting a small committee, a security council, or an internal developer team to press that button might work for small markets, but it creates a single point of failure as market value increases. Multisigs only multiply the number of trust assumptions rather than removing them. To achieve economic security, Phill argues that the cost of forcing a false outcome must be higher than the potential profit from the attack. If a bank holds $100, the security protecting it must cost more than $100 to bypass, or it will rationally be robbed.
Shorting the Token Delta-Neutral
Simple token voting fails to provide this security because of how easily an attacker can hedge their position. In a naive system where a 51 percent majority of tokens settles a market, an attacker could acquire the necessary voting power while shorting the oracle token on an external exchange. They could then force a false resolution, steal the market collateral, and simultaneously profit from the crash of the token price. By staying delta-neutral, the attacker avoids the economic loss that should have deterred the attack.
Augur's design prevents this by forcing participants to bond capital behind outcomes and disputes. If a dispute escalates, participants must commit progressively larger amounts of capital. The system is designed so that a malicious actor is forced to buy the token in a form that guarantees they lose its entire value if they are wrong, with no way to short their way out of the loss. This mechanism is now being separated into Augur Lituus, an oracle-as-a-service product. The Lituus Foundation, which Phill co-founded in 2025, funds two independent development tracks: Lituus Labs, which builds this finalizing oracle, and Dark Florist, which explores user-facing markets with non-finalizing designs.
Lava at the End of a Tunnel
The ultimate defense in the Augur protocol is the algorithmic fork. This is a terminal dispute phase that splits the protocol into separate universes based on the disputed outcomes. Token holders must then migrate their REP tokens into the universe they believe reflects the true result and will retain economic value. Phill uses game theory to explain why this deterrent is so effective.
In game theory, there is a concept called backward propagation: if there is lava at the end of a tunnel, you never start digging the tunnel. Because the threat of an algorithmic fork is so economically scary to attackers, Augur ran for six years without ever triggering a fork.
To prove the system works under real economic conditions, the Lituus Foundation deliberately triggered the first live v2 fork on April 8, 2026. Known as the Moon Fork, this event used a prediction market for the Artemis II mission to exercise the dispute mechanism. The fork also serves as a pruning mechanism for the network. REP is not a passive investment, and holders are expected to act as service providers by participating in disputes. Inactive REP reduces the capital available to fight malicious actors and lowers the cost of an attack.
A Lighthouse in the Storm
The Moon Fork includes a one-way migration window that is currently closing. Phill is clear about the consequences for those who do not participate in the transition of the protocol.
Every REP token holder must convert their REP token during a 2-month migration window. After the window closes, unmigrated REP tokens lose their fundamental utility and ability to participate in the new protocol.
Speaking on July 31, 2026, Phill notes that the deadline is only one day away, on August 1. He urges any remaining holders to check the project social media accounts and complete the migration immediately. Beyond the migration, he invites developers to join the Discord, where internal calls are held in public, and to contribute to the open-source implementation.
